| Far too much terrorism in Kashmir: British minister | | | GUWAHATI, MAY 17 There is "far too much" terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and Assam's neighbouring states, a British minister said today.
"We know about terrorism as both Britain and India face similar challenges. There is far too much terrorism causing conflict in Kashmir and in Assam's neighbouring states," Britain's Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Kim Howells said here.
"Islamic terrorists kill innocent people on our streets in London," he said.
Britain was concerned about the movement of Taliban elements from Baluchistan and Afghanistan into Pakistan. "We know Pakistan very well and exchange information on movement of terrorists," he said.
"We know your neighbourhood. If neighbouring countries become failed states they become problems in terms of security for India and Britain," he told reporters while inaugurating a British Information Centre.
Speaking about intelligence sharing between Britain and India, Howells said Indian intelligence and police officers are regularly trained in Britain.
He was also appreciative of Bangladesh's caretaker government which had acknowledged the presence of terrorist camps on its soil unlike the denials issued by its predecessor.
Howells hoped the government in Bangladesh would continue its drive against terrorists, gangsters and kidnappers as lawlessness was causing suffering in India's northeast.
On India's bid for membership of the UN Security Council, he said, "We will continue to support India's membership. For the UN to be successful, India has to play a major role and should be a member of the Security Council." |
