| Black Friday in Hyderabad | | 2 live bombs defused, says AP chief minister | | May 18, 2007 It was a bloody afternoon at the historic Mecca Masjid in the Old City of Hyderabad when a powerful bomb exploded in the mosque premises. Till last count, the explosion had claimed five lives and seriously injured about 17. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekara Reddy told newsmen in New Delhi on Friday that soon after the blast in the afternoon in the Mecca Mosque in Hyderabad, two other live bombs were defused in the area. But for this, the situation could have taken an ugly turn, Reddy said. "I don't know yet if there is a terrorist angle to the blast. But it will be investigated, the root causes will be gone into," he told newsmen. The chief minister also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those killed in the bomb blast, and of Rs 20,000 for those injured. Terming the bomb blast as "internal sabotage" on the peace and tranquility of the state, Reddy said, "Every sane person has to unequivocally condemn to this incidents, and I appeal to everyone concerned to show restraint, cooperate with the police administration and the government, , and see that everyone does their duty in restoring peace and tranquility." "When Hyderabad is doing so well on all fronts, and Andhra Pradesh is marching forward, these sort of incidents will only create problems and unnecessarily hinder progress. The antisocial elements who want to see that all different communities of the state should not live in peace and prosperity will create such problems." Pointing out that his government was alerted two months ago about such incidents, Reddy said all efforts were being taken in the wake of the blast to prevent such incidents elsewhere. The needful precautionary measures were being taken in other parts of the state as well, he said.
