| Grenade blast rocks Handwara, 2 soldiers among 16 injured | | Close lieutenant of Azhar Masood among four killed in JK | | Updated at 1600 hours IST SRINAGAR , AUGUST 08, KPS: Sixteen persons, including two security personnel were injured, when militants attacked Border Security Force (BSF) convoy at Handwara in Kupwara district of North Kashmir on Tuesday afternoon, while security forces claimed to have gunned-down a close lieutenant of Jaish Mohammad chief ,Azhar Masood in Doda district of Jammu. Elsewhere in two separate encounters at Kupwara and Jammu , three militants were killed.
According to the reports reaching kpsnews.com, At-least16 persons including two soldiers were injured when suspected militants hurled a grenade towards an army convoy at close vicinity of fire station Handwara on Tuesday around 12:15 pm IST. Sources said that although grenade hit one of the BSF vehicles but it bounced back off the vehicle, and exploded on the road side, injuring sixteen persons including two BSF personnel. The injured were rushed to the sub-district hospital, from where four of the critically injured persons including newly married couple were referred to the SMHS hospital, Srinagar for specialized treatment, sources said.
Thirteen of the injured persons were identified as Ghulam Mohammad lone, Nazir Ahmad Khan son of Ghulam Mohammad Khan his wife Fahmeeda of Langate, Mohammad Maqbool Wani son of Mohammad Yousuf Wani, Mehtabi Begum wife of Habibullah of Langate, Naseema wife of Abdul Jabar Mir of Watpora, Mohammad Ayoob Khan son of Ghulam Nabi Khan, Azmi wife of Nazir Ahmad Malik, Wasi daughter of Abdul Khaliq Sohi, M. Abdullah Reshi son of Abdul Aziz Reshi Gulshan daughter of Ahmad Wani, Tariq Ahmad Chopan son of Mohammad Sultan, Suhail Ahmad Khan son of Ashraf Khan and Gowher Ahmad Mir son of Abdul Jabar Mir.
In another incident, police claimed to have killed, Hasan Pakistani, a militant believed to be the right hand man of Jaish-e-Mohd chief, Azhar Masood in Doda Tuesday afternoon. Police said that acting on some specific information about the presence militant in the area, troops launched the cordon-search operation and during the course of operation, JeM commander was killed.
Official sources said that two militants of JeM militant outfit were killed in a fierce encounter between militants and troops at Jakti-Nagrota in the outskirts of the Jammu city in the wee hours on Tuesday.
Police said that acting on a tip-off about the presence of militants in the area, troops launched a cordon and search operation in Jakti-Negrota. Police said that as troops were zeroing in, militants holed up inside the area opened fire at them (troops) which was retaliated by the troops, thus triggering an encounter. In the encounter which ensued, two JeM militants were killed.
One of the slain militants has been identified as Abu Khalid from Pakistan . Two AK rifles, four magazines, four grenades besides explosive materials and a police badge were recovered from the slain militants, police added.
Militants attacked a police station at Zakura in Srinagar late Monday evening, however grenade exploded without casing any damage.
One unidentified militant was killed in pursuit of intruding across the line of control at Machil sector in North Kashmir ’s Kupwara District late last night.
Sources said that suspected militants lobbed a powerful grenade inside the heavily guarded police station in the Zakura late Monday night which exploded inside the lawn of police station, however no damage was done in the explosion.
Police and paramilitary forces immediately launched searches in the area around the police station. No arrests, however, were made.
