No plan to change local names of any area in Ladakh: Army | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 14: The Defence ministry today clarified that only a new military garrison station was being named as 'Nanak Hill Military Station' in Neemo. The statement comes in the wake of allegations that the Army has been changing the local traditional names of areas in Ladakh region. He said all land under the possession of the Army in Ladakh, is under regularisation through proper procedure. The revenue authorities have accorded concurrence for processing the case for regularisation, he said, adding that all concerned including the village sarpanch, Tehsildar up to the Deputy Commissioner level are taken on board prior to acquiring any land in the region. Lt Col Joshi said a new military garrison is being established in approximately 300 acres of legally acquired land close to the Pathar Sahib Gurudwara, which is historically associated with Guru Nanak Dev and is revered by the locals and tourists visiting Ladakh. He clarified that only the military station is being named as 'Nanak Hill Military Station' and this decision, in no way, is linked to changing the traditional name of that region as was being alleged. About water pipes he said the proposal of Neemo village Panchayat for laying a water pipeline, through the government land, under the possession of the Army since 1986, was sympathetically examined by the Army authorities. Keeping in mind the genuine humanitarian requirement of the local populace, the Army's concurrence to carry out the digging work for water pipeline through this land was conveyed to the Panchayat as well as to Retd Sub Maj (Hony Capt) Tashi Chhepal, VrC, the Sarpanch of Neemo village, on October 10 2014, he said. He said as on date nearly 500 meters of digging work has been completed by the civil administration. Thus there is no case of the Army preventing the water pipeline project as was alleged. The concept of 'Sons of Soil', for employment of locals for all defence related works in the region is maintained at the forefront. In the harsh and challenging environment and weather conditions in Ladakh the local 'Brave Hearts' can provide the desired output and hence maximum employment for labourers related and porter related jobs are provided to the locals. Nearly 1200 Ladakhi people have been recruited for the purpose during last year alone, out of which a substantial number are from Neemo village. While it is endeavoured to hire maximum labourers from within Ladakh, the existing rules and regulations of the Government are religiously being followed by the Army authorities. He said that it is clarified that due bonhomie exists between the Army authorities and the local administrative authorities at all places in Ladakh. |
