Differences, divergent power centres in coalition taking toll of development: Omar
‘Far flung area present depressing picture’
5/19/2007 11:27:47 PM

Rajouri, May 19
President National Conference Mr. Omar Abdullah today said that divergent power centres within coalition and sticking differences among alliance partners has taken heavy toll of developmental progress, particularly in far flung areas of the state, depriving the people of even the basic amenities.

Addressing an enthusiastic public gathering at Kotranka Rajouri the NC president and Member Parliament Omar Abdullah, who is on ten days long tour of border districts of Rajouri and Poonch came down heavily on coalition government for its failure in effecting the development corresponding to the funds it received from the centre.

He said, “While they keep on creating great hype about the huge funds pouring in from the centre, there is hardly any development visible on the ground particularly”. This, he said has not only come as a shock for the people, but also pushed them to hopelessness and despair.

The main reason behind this desperately ‘poor performance’ is the lack of cohesion and the divergent power centres within the coalition, Omar said adding that today a common man feels robbed of the expectations he had attached towards the government in the backdrop of huge funds the state received over the years from centre.

Criticizing the policies of the coalition government, the NC president who was accompanied by provincial president Ajay Sadhotra and MLC Devender Singh Rana said that the developmental scenario in far-flung areas is grim which speaks volumes about the tall claims being made by the alliance partners. He said instead of working for general good, each alliance partner is busy in promoting its party agenda thus leaving the general masses at the mercy of God.

Omar said, “The promise of good governance by collation has fallen flat as the corruption is rampant from top to the bottom”.

He said the most unfortunate part of the politics of coalition partners is that each of them is trying to divide people on regional, linguistic and ethnic basis. “On the name of good governance what we have received is attempts of creating wedge on the name of Pahari, Gujjari, Kashmiri and Dogri”.

Despite receiving huge grants from centre for upgradation of social structure, the condition of roads, educational institutions and health services in far flung areas is awful, Omar said adding ‘on seeing the condition of far off areas one wonders where all the money gone’.

Earlier, more than one hundred workers from various political parties including PDP and Congress joined National Conference in presence of the party president.

Other who spoke on the occasion included, Provincial president Ajay Sadhotra, MLC Devender Singh Rana, MLAs Mohammad Aslam, Rashpal Singh, former member parliament Choudhary Talib Hussain and district president Bashir Ahmed Wani.
