Sinha cautions against hate Army propaganda
5/19/2007 11:31:39 PM

BADGAM MAY 19
Governor Lt. General (Retd) S K Sinha today regretted a sort of hate Army propaganda by some people creating an impression that it was the number one enemy of the people of Kashmir.
He, however, complimented the sagacity of masses for appreciating the good work done by the Army for common good and refusing to get swayed by the malicious propaganda.
The Governor was addressing prominent citizens of Badgam after inaugurating the second phase of renovation work carried out by the Army at famous shrine of Ayatollah Syed Mehdi Alsafvi here this morning.
General Sinha said that during his tours to various areas especially the far off places he felt elated to find the amount of goodwill between the Army and the people. While the people had many expectations, the Army never failed to render the assistance or help in the hour of need. The Army was complimented for its splendid role during the earthquake and snow tsunami, which has left an indelible mark in the hearts of the affected people, he added. He said and added that isolated blacksheep in the army found guilty of any violation would be severely punished as per the law.
The Governor compared the record of the Indian Army with other armies combating terrorism around the world and said that during 18 years of proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir not a single place of worship has been damaged or desecrated by the forces. In this context, he referred to the damages caused to mosques in Wana Baluchistan and Faluja in Iraq by by foreign armies while fighting insurgents. Apart from this, civilian population also got trapped and several killed in air strikes in these places, he said, adding that India never used air power or artillery against militants. He also made a mention of damages caused by militants to the Shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani in Chrar-e-Sharief. He said when terrorists had occupied Hazratbal it was ensured that no damage whatsoever was allowed to be done to the holy shrine and terrorists were made to vacate it.
Praying for peace in Kashmir, General Sinha said that the troops would return to barracks after performing their additional role in bringing about normalcy in the State. However, he said, they will continue to defend the borders, protect the people and render all humanitarian assistance even after their role ends in bringing about internal peace. Fighting terrorism is not a new phenomenon for the armies the world over, he said while making a mention of similar situations in Vietnam, Kenya, Algeria, Baluchistan, Wazirstan, Afghanistan, Iraq and erstwhile East Pakistan. He maintained that no army in the world had acquitted itself better in dealing with militancy than Indian Army in Kashmir.
