Legislators happy with pay hike lollipop
8/8/2006 7:56:42 PM

Jammu,August 8:-Chief Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, who continues to examine the pros and cons of any cabinet expansion, has, for the time being, silenced legislators aspiring for a ministerial berth with a lollipop in the shape of enormous hike in their monthly salary and perks.

"Yes we are happy over the increase in our salary and perks,"said one senior Congress MLA.He said on Tuesday "we are satisfied with the much needed massive hike in our salary and perks. We used to get Rs.3000 to Rs.4000 as basic pay during the last several years and now we will be getting Rs.20,000 as basic pay thereby making our gross salary including perks to jump to between Rs.35000 and Rs.40,000."

The legislator confirmed that "those who were keen to get ministerial posts are now satisfied with the pay rise.Atleast we are now in a position to meet our daily expenses which we have been incurring on entertaining our electorates who visit us at our houses."

However, another legislator said "we are satisfied with the revised paystructure for which we are thankful to the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister. But in the interest of a collective leadership cabinet expansion has become necessary."

He said that a Chief Minister is supposed to keep a couple of portfolios in his hands so that he got ample time for reviewing the security situation in the troubled state. He said "Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad is seen glued to files with the result he does not get sufficient time in touring different areas in the state for knowing peoples' problems."

The legislators disclosed that those MLAs who were heading various boards and corporations were also satisfied after the Government declared that they did not come under the office of profit. Some of these legislators had feared the fall of the axe on their heads but they are happy because they are safe.

Inside reports said that number of legislators belonging to the Congress, the PDP,the PDF and the Panthers Party continue to mount pressure on the heads of their organisations for forcing the Chief Minister to expand the council of ministers.

Despite these pressures Mr Azad has left these legislators guessing thereby ensuring their loyalty to to him,if not to the ruling coalition. This so because most of the legislators aspiring for ministerial berth leave no stone unturned in keeping the Chief Minister in good humour."Here lies the art of securing obdenience and loyalty from the legislators which Mr Azad has displayed in abundance,"said one legislator.
