| Paying homage to departed leader – Congress style | | Ground workers not allowed to pay tributes; leaders allege party higher-ups lure workers through money | |
B Mintoo JAMMU | May 21
The main function to pay homage to former Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi at Jammu Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee office here today witnessed rowdy scene as the ground level workers were allegedly not given time to pay tributes to the departed leader and some of the leaders present at the occasion setting off blame game alleging that party higher-ups, in a bid to show strength, collect workers during rallies and other functions by offering them money. It all started as soon as the media men, invited to cover the function, packed up and went back to their respective offices. According to highly placed party sources, no sooner than the media left, one of the leaders rose and threw allegation that Congress party has lost work culture and many leaders are busy in showing their strength in front of their superiors by luring the workers through money. As this leader was made to sit down by others, one of the legislators stood and started making allegations that not only the party workers are being neglected by the party leadership but even the legislators are not treated well in the party. He said that the party has been degraded by some vested interests and if the situation remains the same, he will not contest any election in future. When it was the turn of a veteran Congress leader to speak, another veteran who is close relative of the legislator, who had started the blame game, stood and started leveling allegations that ground level workers have been rendered useless by the party seniors. They are never given chance to bring forth their problems. As all this went on for some time, the allegations leveled proved true as none from the ground level workers was given chance to pay homage to the late prime minister and the meeting was called to an end. The game of allegations and shifting blames saw repetition when the leaders came out of the meeting hall and assembled at party president office within the premises. A senior party leader when contacted expressed unhappiness over the unruly incident and on the condition of anonymity said that when the party order cannot be set right by the Chief Minister, how it can be expected of him that he will bring in work culture within the administration.
