| Separatists want their involvement in talks meant not for good governance but for settlement of Kashmir issue | | | FIRST STORY
Srinagar,August 8 :-Kashmiri separatists have poohpoohed Chief Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad's recent statement in the Assembly that the Hurriyat Conference had not responded to an opportunity that had been provided to them for taking part in talks meant for restoring peace in the troubled state.
Senior APHC leaders said that "we have been always prepared for talks with the Government of India and the one in Islamabad" adding that "we had so far four rounds of talks with the central leaders during the last three years."
The leaders said that "we did not accept invitation to the roundtable conference which the Prime Minister had convened in Srinagar in the last week of May because we did not want to board a crowded bus whose passengers were trying to explore the scope of establishing good governance and of bringing about improvement in roads and drainage."
"Our main aim in getting involved in the parleys is to find a durable solution to the Kashmir issue,"they said adding that "those who had been invited to the second roundtable conference their views on the state's accession to India were already known so sitting with them was hardly going to be any gainful experience for us."
The Hurriyat leaders said that "we risked our lives by agreeing to talk to Delhi and still we are being misunderstood. We are for durable peace in the entire Indian subcontinent."
They posed a question :"How can the Government of India expect us to cooperate when it takes three to six months for the centre to resume its dialogue with us"? "We want a sustained and meaningful dialogue and the onus rests on the shoulders of Delhi for facilitating a purposeful dialogue,"they argued. The APHC leaders also ridiculed the claim of the Chief Minister on the security scenario in which he had stated that the situation had improved and the incidence of human rights violations had come down. The separatists cited the recent statement of PDP Chief,Ms Mehbooba Mufti,in which she had stated that as far as the human rights violations were concerned there was a gap between the ground realities and the record on the paper. The Hurriyat leaders said that custodial killings, harassment of innocent people, inconvenience caused to general public during search and frisk operations continued unabated and wanted the Government to review the situation and take remedial measures. |
