| Coast guard aviation celebrates it's silver jubilee | | |
Jammu, 21 May 2007 To commemorate the ‘Indian Coast Guard Aviation – Silver Jubilee’ various events are being organized at Indian Coast Guard Air Station Daman on 21 and 22 May 07. Defence Minister Shri AK Antony would inspect the ceremonial parade, interact with the men and witness air display on 22 May 07. A series of events planned would showcase the multi faceted capabilities of the Coast Guard Aviation. The Best Aviation unit Trophy would also be awarded during the ceremonial parade. Indian Coast Guard (ICG) which was constituted as an Armed Force on 01 Feb 1977 ushered in the aviation wing on 02 May 1982 with commissioning of the first Coast Guard Air unit at Goa. The growth of the fledgling air arm has been exponential. From just two helicopters in 1982, the ICG Aviation today boasts of 45 aircraft, two air stations, two air enclaves and number of air squadrons. The yeoman service being rendered by the Coast Guard Aviation is being recognized by the maritime community for their dedication and commitment in saving lives of seafarers, providing succor to marooned fishermen, combating marine pollution and effective monitoring of the vast Maritime Zones. 3896 lives have been saved at sea till to date. Indian Coast Guard on numerous occasions has demonstrated its operational versatility while handling relief and disaster operations such as Tsunami, BHN fire and pollution response at sea. The aviation wing in fulfilling the Indian Coast Guard’s motto “WE PROTECT” has invoked a sense of safety and security amongst the maritime fraternity, said a PIB (Defence Wing) release.
