11/28/2014 11:33:32 PM
Early Times Report

GANDERBAL, Nov 28: Peoples Republican Party (PRP) spokesperson and party candidate from Ganderbal constituency, Mir Ghulam Rasool Butwani today accused National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of violating poll norms by allegedly using both money and muscle power to win elections.
Mir, who was participating in meeting of candidates from Ganderbal assembly segment held with Deputy Commissioner, Ganderbal, levelled serious allegations on the ruling and the opposition party and accused them of making a mockery of the entire election process in the state. Mir and another independent candidate from Ganderbal, Bilal Ahmed Khandey alleged that both the ruling and opposition parties had made a mockery of entire election system in the state.
They said the luring of electorate through money kills the very spirit of holding elections or strengthening the democratic system in the state. "If money is the sole means of winning the elections, what is the fun of holding polls in the state which is facing turmoil for the last 25 years?" they asked.
Mir said the Centre as well as Election Commission should take serious exception to it and introduce reforms in poll process.
He stressed that instead of holding huge rallies and spending crores of rupees, the EC should adopt the western pattern of elections in the country and all political parties should release their manifestos through print and electronic media to apprise the people of their policies and programmes on the basis of which they can caste the vote.
This way the state exchequer will not be put to loss only and it will also make the democratic process more effective, he added.
He also stressed that people needed to be educated about the value of their vote so that instead of being misled and exploited by some vested elements, they exercise their right to franchise cautiously and make the selection of candidate on the basis of merit and performance.
