Renovation work of Jhelum Bund stops | People inconvenienced | | Majid Nabi
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 28: The renovation work of historic Bund along River Jhelum, that suffered extensive damage due to the recent floods right from Batwara to Amirakadal, has been abruptly stopped by the authorities resulting into huge inconvenience to the local populace. The residents living on Jhelum embankments accused the authorities of rubbing salt to their injuries by halting the renovation work of Bund which has compounded their problems to an 'alarming' extent. Pertinently the September 7, deluge that wrecked devastation far and wide in Kashmir also caused far-reaching damage to Jhelum embankments with the people up in arms against the government for taking them for a ride. "When flood waters receded we were stunned to see that the Bund has developed deep gaps as the gushing waters had caused fearsome corrosion to it right from Batwara to Amirakadal. The staircases that were once used to reach on to the bund are nowhere today. Fearing serious accident we use to keep our children indoors as the pathways and bridges within the locality have become vulnerable for serious accidents," Syed Haroon, a resident of Peer Zoo Island, told Early Times. He said that the inhabitants of Peer Zoo heaved a sigh of relief the moment government started renovation of Bund; however the contractor's lackluster and supercilious approach disappointed them as he never bothered to stick on to his obligations. "Whenever we tried to apprise him about our problems he instead of listening to our repeated pleas responded with arrogance. With cigarette in his mouth he comes like a prince having cup of tea with I&FC officials and returns bald-facedly," claimed Syed in seething voice. When contacted Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department, Javed Jaffar assured strict action against the contractor Nisar Shah, saying he will personally visit the spot and take stock of the renovation work.He said that the Bund which was once considered as the circlet of Srinagar city nowadays speaks volumes about official apathy. "Once known for its scenic beauty the Bund nowadays has worn the look of Afghanistan's mountainous region the famous (Tora Bora), the official accommodation of Director prisons which was completely damaged due to the floods has not been renovated and its debris which is spread over a half kilometer is yet to be removed," Imtiyaz Ahmad Qazi another resident claimed. The inhabitants of Peer Zoo alleged the authorities of siphoning off the huge sums under the grab of renovation of trendy 'Bund'. "The problem compounds during rains as the muck originated from silt that set down after the floods have endangered the lives of the children and elderly people of the area," he said. |
