US believes in Pak army's cosmetic operations against terrorists | | | Washington seems to be keen in building a long term relations with Pakistan notwithstanding the fact that the soil of Pakistan was being used for exporting terror to India. Despite the fact that Washington is aware of the ground realities it is in favour of reviving its military links with Pakistan which, during the last 10 years or so, had undergone some stress and strain. And the recent visit of Pakistan Army Chief, Gen. Raheel Sharif to Washington, is said to have removed some of the misunderstandings between the two sides. This is indicated by the events In Washington, Gen. Sharif received very broad support for Pakistan's counter-terrorism campaign. During his visit, Gen Sharif met a wide range of US officials - in both military and civil establishments - as part of an effort to rebuild a long-term relationship between the two militaries. The two sides had very straightforward, constructive and honest discussions on the need to go after all terrorists, including the Haqqani network, and to make sure that all terrorist safe havens are shut down. And Washington, does recognize that significant progress has been made" in the fight against terrorists since the North Waziristan operation. The US authorities have conveyed to Gen.Sharif that more work needs to be done, but there's true commitment from Gen Sharif to deliver on this. Reports indicate that People in Washington were very pleased with Gen. Sharif's commitment to fighting all terrorists, including the Haqqani network. The US authorities noted that the effort to rebuild a long-term relationship between the two militaries had began several years ago. And Gen. Sharif's visit continues that process and help strengthen the relationship. Yes one cannot object to the national interest the US has maintained its relations with Pakistan. There was a time when despite its non-alignment policy New Delhi had a pro-Soviet union tilt which had motivated Washington for befriending Pakistan possibly on the plea that an enemies enemy is a friend. However, during the last 10 years or so there has been marked improvement in the Indo-US ties. Bill Clintons, Nixon and Barack Obama have been in favour of cultivating India as far as the US war against terror is concerned. Washington believes, that too rightly, that India could contribute to America's plan to end the menace of terror in some affected countries. It is so because both US and India are under threat from terrorists of various hues. What seems to be amazing is the way Washington continues to provide military aid to Pakistan despite being aware of the fact that Islamabad, especially its Army and the ISI, have been diverting part of this military aid for aiding and for providing material assistance to terrorists, whether they operate in Afghanistan or in India, including Jammu and Kashmir..Yes Washington does not want Pakistan to fall in the lap of China with which Islamabad has built strong bridges during the last about 36 years. Apart from economic aid China has been aiding Pakistan with military hardware, missiles and other sophisticated weapons. If Pakistan has been using part of the Chinese weapons and explosives for aiding terrorists it can be understandable because ties between India and China are still under stress. It is not understandable as to why Washington has been adopting a passive silence when reports have reached the US capital that Pakistan was diverting part of US military aid for exporting terror to India when there has been significant improvement in ties between India and America. Hope Washington reviews its military aid programme to Pakistan which if done could force Pakistan to come down heavily on terrorists otherwise Islamabad will continue to carry out cosmetic operations against terrorists.
