| MiG-21 goes missing | | |
JAMMU, MAY 22 In yet another air mishap, a MiG-21 fighter aircraft of IAF is feared to have crashed in the Basantgarh-Mahore mountains in Reasi district with a pilot on board also reported to be missing. The aircraft lost contact with ground control minutes after taking off from the Udhampur air base at 10.40 am according to an IAF spokesman in New Delhi. "The aircraft is missing and a land and air search has been launched to trace it", he said. Low clouds over the area are hampering the rescue operations, IAF Officials said. Meanwhile, land search parties from Udhampur based Army Northern command are also scouring the thickly forested area. The missing MiG-21 fighter was of type 75, which are in the process of being phased out by the Air Force. This is the third mishap involving a MiG-21 fighter in the last one year. Since the last three years, according to official figures tabled in Parliament nine MiG-21 aircraft have crashed. The IAF lost as many as 30 combat aircraft in accidents from April 1 2004 to May 8 this year.
