| JKP lifts Nawang-Dorje-Stobdan Cricket cup | | Leh to have Ice Hockey Rink shortly; CEC | |
Leh May 22 The Jammu and Kashmir Police has lifted the 11th Nawang-Dorje-Stobdan Cricket Cup 2007 by defeating Fateh Club by a margin of 98 runs. In an exciting final match, the JKP team after winning the toss elected to bat first scored 249 runs in allotted 30 overs. The Fateh team was bundled out on a meager score of just 150 runs. Ramzan of JKP team was declared the man of the match for his magnificent unbeaten 112 runs. The JKP team was awarded Rs.25000 while the runner up team was given Rs.15, 000. As many as 384 players of 21 cricket clubs of the district participated in the 35- day long tournament. Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC Chering Dorje, who was the chief guest on the occasion, recalled the supreme sacrifices of Nawang Dorje and Stobdan, who laid down their lives in the historic movement. Referring to the sports activities in the desert region, the CEC said that LAHDC is endeavouring to create sports infrastructures in a big way in the district and in the first phase an Ice Hockey Rink of international standard would be constructed shortly.. Responding to the demand for early creation of multipurpose play ground, Dorje said that the existing Leh Polo ground would soon be improved with some modifications having a big stage on the end of the polo ground keeping historical Leh Palace in the back ground. Appreciating the Tip Top club for organizing the tournament, he said it is the best tribute to the departed fighters who gave their lives for a common cause. In his welcome address, the President of Tip Top club highlighted the objectives of this tournament. Among others present at the finals were former CEC and President DCC Rigzin Spalbar, SSP Leh Ashok Kumar, the kiths and kins of late Nawang Dorje and Stobdan, district officers, religious heads and a large number of locals.
