| Measures to Check Water-Borne Diseases on | | | Jammu, June 30 : With the early arrival of monsoon rains the apprehensions of waterborne diseases are not ruled out as the health department of Jammu and Kashmir has advised people to take precautionary measures in view of the likelihood of increase in water-borne diseases like diarrhoea and jaundice during summer.
The people have been asked to boil drinking water for at least ten minutes and wash raw vegetables and fruit thoroughly before eating, a medical officer said.
He said the health department has also advised people to wash hands with soap after going to toilet and before eating. They should also use chlorine tablets.
Giving details of some water born diseases he said "Drinking of water contaminated by human or animal feces, which contains pathogenic microorganisms, causes water borne diseases".
Floodwaters can carry with it Raw sewage, Silt, Oil or Chemical wastes and cause diarrhea and dysentery.
Infectious diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and protozoa are the most common and wide spread health risk associated with drinking water.

When asked, how does Water Borne Disease Spread? he said "Water borne diseases spread by contamination of drinking water systems with the urine and feces of infected animal or people",.
"Contamination of water may occur due to floodwaters, water runoff from landfills, septic fields, and sewer pipes" he added
Symptoms of Water borne diseases depend upon the infecting Agent and may begin from two to ten days after drinking the contaminated water, and may include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and low-grade fever.
