| Officer, Driver injured in Militant Attach in Mendhar | | | Jammu,May 23 A Sub divisional police officer( SDPO) and his driver were seriously hurt in a fidayeen attack outside their office in Mendhar town of Poonch district wednesday morning when an unidentified gunmen attacked them opening indiscriminate firing. According to reports reaching here, "an unidentified gunmen attacked a sub divisional police officer(SDPO) Youghal Manhas while he was crossing through the main street in his official vehicle in the Mendhar town wedensday morning." Critically wounded Manhas was first shifted to a nearby hospital from where he was airlifted along with his driver Manzoor Ahmed to Government Medical college, Jammu for specialized medical treatment. On reaching Jammu,Manhas was taken to opearation theatre for immediate surgery. He had received bullet inujuries on his arm, shoulder and chest. Immediately after the suspected militant opened indiscriminate firing on SDPO panic gripped the main street area and all the shopkeepers downed their shutters and ran for cover, eyewitnesses report said. Security forces present on the spot cordoned off the entire area and with the help of local police launched massive manhunt to nab the gunmen who fled taking advantage of the rush in the bazaar.No militant group has till now taken responsibility of the attack but police authorities suspect hand of Lashkar -e- Toiba opeartives behind the attack. Condemning the attack on the senior police officer, former state BJP President DrNirmal Singh said the recent tension in Mendhar and the role played by SDPO in diffusing the crisis should also be taken in to account during investigations.
