Problems of West Pak and PoK Refugees need to be addressed separately: SoS
>>‘PoK Refugees should be made part of Indo Pak peace talks’
5/24/2007 11:45:13 PM

Jammu May 24
Haunted by the horrid experiences of the October 1947, the PoK refugees and West Pakistan refugees are still looking for happy days to come. Emphasizing to adopt different yardsticks to resolve the grievances and issues of the PoK and the West Pakistan refugees, the refugee leaders asked the state and center that there was a dire need to address these issues not seeing through one glass but through a kaleidoscope.
‘What has compelled the state and central government to negate our civil rights, is still a mystery to us?, said Vijay Tandon a descendent from the PoK refugee family. He giving vent to his inherited ire and bitterness said, “only hope of happy days- is what we inherited from our ancestors. The political lexis now and then doled to our forefathers has not only left our community in distress but even made feel betrayed and let downed for the last over five decades.’ He also demanded that they too should be treated at par with the internally displaced Kashmiri Pandits viz. their wards should be granted reservation in professional education and services.
Recently, in a fresh move the political development once again dampened the spirits of the both PoK and West Pakistan refugees, said Ram Prakash now settled at Roopnagar. He said, “the developments once again proved bone dry to refugees who were hoping some respite like a farmer in the hope of rains looks to the heavens but clouds don’t pour for him.’
These refugees also feel may feel zealous to the alienated youths sitting on the others side but have PDP to sound an alarming call for their return with dignity. ‘While we have been remained loyal to the Constitution of India and prayed for the integrity of nation we are downed against those who have received training to disturb the peace and harmony of the nation and state as well, acrimoniously said another PoK Refugee.
Both, Rajiv Chuni chairman SoS International Organisation for PoK Refugees and Gurmeet Singh general secretary of the organization told The Early Times ,that state and central governments not only have created illusions on this humane issue but also seem to linger on instead of finding any resolution to this problems. Giving details Singh said those who have migrated from West Pakistan after 15 August 1947 to Indian side till October are designated as West Pakistani Refugees while those who migrated from October 22, 1947with the fall of Muzaffarabad and on November 26 with fall of Mirpur that were the part of then state of Jammu and Kashmir are described as PoK refugees as the Pakistan occupied over 40,000 sq miles of the state now denoted as Pak occupied Kashmir (PoK). The major difference between the two migrations is that PoK Refugees are the part and parcel of the state being state subject holders while the West Pakistan Refugees don’t have the state subject. ‘Over five decades have passed the demands of the refugees including PoK and West Pak Refugees remained entangled within the political assurances but within any headway for resolution- if for west Pakistan refugees the state has to amend its constitution but what is the problems with resolving genuine problems of the PoK refugees, asked Rajiv Chuni.
Both Chuni and Singh also opinioned that being a part and parcel of the princely state the Refugees from now PoK, should be made a part of the Indo Pak Peace Initiatives/talks as they had their stakes instead of the some political leaders claiming their stakes for vested political interests.
