| Accident victim’s kidneys, liver transplanted to two Army personnel | | | Jammu, May 24 In a first ever case in the Army, kidneys and liver of an accident victim were successfully retrieved late last night and transplanted today to two army personnel in Army Hospital (R&R) in New Delhi and one lady in the Naval Hospital, Ashwani in Mumbai. Ramesh Chand, 60- year old father of Havaldar Madan Mohan of the Indian Army and Corporal Kamlesh Kumar of the Indian Air Force was injured critically in a hit and run road accident at Faridabad on Monday last. He was operated upon at Army Hospital (R&R) here. He, however, breathed his last late last evening. Mrs Hemlata, wife of the deceased desired to donate the organs; however, being a road accident case, postmortem was a legal requirement. Through postmortems are not generally carried out in Army Hospitals, so as to facilitate the speedy retrieval of organs, Dr Khakha Alexander of Safdarjung Hospital carried out postmortem in Army Hospital itself. In a night long procedure, one kidney and liver were retrieved and transplanted to two serving soldiers in Delhi while another kidney was airlifted late at night to Mumbai, where it was transplanted to the wife of a serving soldier. All the recipients are doing well. With a computerized data bank of patients in need of various organs, Army doctors are now in a position to send organs from one place to another with the required urgency. The transportation of a kidney from Delhi to Mumbai is considered the first of its kind. The entire procedure was carried out under the supervision of Maj Gen OP Mathew, Brigadier RP Choubey and Col AK Seth of Army Hospital (R&R). In the last two months, this is the fourth case of organ transplantation in Army Hospital (R&R), a Defence release said.
