| Initiate Glacier Management in the University: Prof Soz to SKUAST | | |

Climatic change and global warming though an international concern, India is proud to have enough number of reputed scientists to take care within the available water resources, when countries like USA and Australia are hesitant in their pursuit. It is a catastrophe and needs to be practical in having a solution. Glaciers, an important natural resource connected with water resource however is a concern for all of us and the Sher-i-Kashmir, University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology, Jammu needs to study the matter and initiate research work on it. This was stated by Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz, the Minister for Water Resource, Government of India today in Jammu while addressing his valedictory address of Biennial Scientist’s Meet 2007 at SKUAST Jammu.
Expressing a concern on the fast melting of glaciers world over, the Union Water Resources Minister impressed upon the University to initiate study on the health of glaciers in the state and initiate research work on the developments. He also asked all relevant departments like Hydraulic, Agriculture and other agencies to render their role in the matter. Desiring the University of Jammu to earn a name, the Minister wanted it to come up with a module to be accepted not only nationally but internationally as well.
Speaking on the problems of draughts and floods damaging the crops and badly affecting the farmer community in the country, the Union Minister said that primarily it is the duty of international community to deal with the matter. India has taken up 31 districts in the country, where special attention is being paid to the welfare of farmer community and all possible avenues including irrigation and water management are being exploited to benefit the community, added the Minister. Expressing his concern on the performance of USA and Australia, the Union Minister wanted G7 countries to come forward in this direction. Talking about India, the Minister said that China alongwith India is highly environment conscious and is dealing the menace consciously.
