| No blanket ban on the use of Polythene in state | | Masses mislead by motivated campaigns: industry | | Jammu | May 25 J&K Polythene Manufacturers and Traders Association (JKPMTA) has condemned a misinformation campaign launched by certain quarters against the concerned industry that has provided livelihood to many people. ‘The polythene is banned only in health sector and tourism but there is no ban imposed by any authority on the manufacture on sale and use of polythene bags in the State as a whole, association stated. Speaking at a press conference here today Rakesh Gupta President J&K Polythene Manufacturers and Traders Association said, “Misinformation campaign has been stated by certain circles entirely with motive of blackmailing.’ He defending the case of polythene bags as a whole is not a health hazard at all and not contributing to pollution, if handled and disposed off properly after their use. He said the some vested elements have carried out a malicious propaganda through their owned media organ that the manufacturers of polythene bags have been bribing the concerned authorities. He said it was also alleged that polythene manufacturers have played a sweet carrot politics with the Jammu Municipal Corporation, the State Pollution Control Board and other concerned departments for not implementing the ban on the polythene industry in the State. He said the fact has been that there is no ban imposed by any authority on the manufacture, sale and use of polythene bags in the State as a whole. ‘Even the J&K High Court has not imposed blanket ban on the manufacture, sale or use of polythene bags, although their carrying in certain tourist spots and some hospitals alone has been banned, he defending his case said. Further added that association has itself launched a campaign in the past through seminars, media conferences, debates and other means to create awareness among the public at large against littering the used polythene bags in the streets, their throwing in the drains and their unscientific burning and disposal. We had also taken up the case with the concerned authorities to implement the Environment Protection Act of the Central government and rules and regulations framed there under for proper handling and disposal of municipal solid waste including the plastic and polythene bags.
