| Rs 40 Cr being spent under Mid-Day Meals scheme this year | | Peerzada for proper monitoring mechanism to make it successful | |
SRINAGAR, MAY - Minister for Education and Haj and Auqaf Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed has said that an amount of Rs. 40 crore is being spent on construction of 6154 kitchen sheds in schools and purchase of 4437 kitchen devices during current financial year. The Minister was addressing a review meeting of centrally sponsored Mid-Day Meals (MDM) Programme under implementation in Kashmir valley at a high-level education officers meeting here today. Stressing for enhancement of participation of students in curricular and extra-curricular activities, Mr. Sayeed that that mid-day meals programme should ensure retention and increase in enrolments of students in schools and bring down rate of dropouts. Referring to urgent need for developing monitoring mechanism of the programme, Mr. Sayeed directed all CEOs and ZEOs to ensure judicious use of foodgrains and other nutritional items being supplied to the schools for student community. He said that the scheme is aimed at improving the nutritional status of children from class I to class V in schools, EGS and AIE centers. He said that the Central government intends to extend its coverage to 8th class students for educationally backward areas of the state. Mr. Sayeed said that mid-day meals encourage poor children to attend school more regularly with concentration on class-room activities. He said that MDM is also significant for providing nutritional support to children of elementary stage in drought-affected areas during summer vacations. Mr. Sayeed while reviewing the health standards of school children directed for regular health check ups, de-worming of school children, micro-nutrient supplement, regular maintenance of weight records of each student and supply of safe drinking water and lavatory facility to the students. Secretary Education Mr. Khazir Mohammad Wani directed all MDM implementing agencies to work with zeal, dedication and sincerity to provide nutrition with 450 calories and 12 gram protein content besides folic acid, vitamin A and iron tablets to combat diseases and disorders like Anaemia, Malnutrition and Iodine deficiency problems of children as per norms. The meeting was attended by Director School Education Kashmir Mr. Rafi Ahamad, State project Director, SSA, Mr. R. S. Samyal, Director CAPD Kashmir Mr. Abdul Majid Mir, Joint Director School Education Mr. Nazir Ahmad Lala, Principal Government Girls Higher Secondary School Kothibagh Mrs. Shahzada Mir, all CEOs and ZEOs of Kashmir division.
