Snow clearance work going on smoothly on Amarnath yatra route
5/26/2007 11:26:24 PM

Jammu,May 26
The state Government has taken in hand snow clearance and upgradation of 45km mountain route from Pahalgam to the holy Amarnath cave. The Government has informed the Shrine Board, headed by Governor,Mr S.K.Sinha,that it has pressed into service manpower and machines and a week before the start of the annual yatra the mountain track would be ready.
On the other hand the Shrine Board has decided to widen at least 75 per cent of the 14 km long mountain route, connecting Baltal with the cave, abode of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati. The Shrine Board has come to the conclusion that despite restrictions groups of pilgrims prefer visiting the cave from the Baltal route which is three times shorter than the Pahalgam-cave route/Consequently,the Shrine Board and the state Government do not want to cause any inconvenience to pilgrims if the Baltal route was not upgraded.Permission to pilgrims to take the Baltal route also has become necessary as it would reduce the rush of yatris on the Pahalgam route.
Past experience has shown that whenever restrictions were impose on pilgrims wishing to visit the cave from Baltal Pahalgam registered so much rush that it would become difficult for the Government to provide suitable accommodation to the pilgrims.
The Shrine Board has been assured by the state Government that it would make suitable lodging arrangements for the pilgrims right from Jammu. The entire track between Jammu and the cave will be placed under heavy security cover. From June 30,when the yatra starts, each caravan of pilgrims will be taken from Jammu to Pahalgam under security escort.Besides police and paramilitary forces a few columns of Army would be deployed in the mountain belts around the cave. The Baltal-cave route will have Army domination.
Shrine Board authorities said today that “we have abandoned the project for preventing defreezing of the ice lingam inside the cave.”They said the project would not be taken in hand because of the controversy over the tampering of the ice lingam last year. One official said that last year the Board official were alleged to have tampered with the ice lingam by installing artificial lingam. The Board was exonerated by Gupta
