| PDP warns against disruptive politicking over troop reduction | | Offhand remarks would spell doom for peace process: Mehbooba | |
Srinagar, May 26 Warning against disruptive politicking over its demand for troop reduction, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today said the skewed and offhand statements from various quarters have the potential danger of not only sabotaging the peace process but undermining the State's political authority as well. Sharply reacting to the latest statements opposing any reduction of troops in the State, PDP President, Ms Mehbooba Mufti said, unfortunately, such hasty proclamations not only go against the assertion of the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh that 'there could be no military solution to the Kashmir issue,' but have the potential of completely jeopardizing the peace and the reconciliation process and undermining the political and democratic institutions in the State. Addressing a one-day convention of PDP workers at Kupwara today, Ms Mufti said the premeditated hawkish statements regarding the State's prevailing security scenario are not only contrary to the actual ground situation, but could spell doom for the regenerating normalcy and economic activity in the State. "Such a narrow analysis of the situation at the highest level in the State Government could not only have disastrous psychological impact on the positive public mood, but would scare away the tourists and the investors as well, setting a blow to the Kashmir's regenerating economic activity," she said and added that the decision of withdrawing the troops from the State, could not be left alone to the security agencies and it has to be necessarily complemented with ingenious and genuine political input. Ms Mufti made it clear that reduction of troops and revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) are unavoidably the most crucial measures to be taken in the present situation when the people's desire to live in peace with dignity is much greater. "If the normalcy process is on the path of reversal as has been claimed today by the Chief Minister, then the right thinking people in the State and the country must ponder over where are we headed for – more death and destruction in Jammu & Kashmir?" she lamented. Asking the Government of India to come out with a clear-cut policy on the issue of troop reduction and revocation of AFSPA, Ms Mufti said the contradictory statements and proclamations from different quarters in this regard are only complicating the matters by adding to the confusion. "While the Prime Minister has already constituted high-power committees to look into the issue of troop reduction and review of AFSPA, I wonder what compels certain quarters to speak exclusively out of turn," she said and added such pronouncements reflect the paranoiac and glacial mindset of the elements who have developed a vested interest in the turmoil and want to keep the pot boiling at whatever cost. Rubbishing the argument that the troops couldn't be thinned given the impending threat of infiltration, Ms Mufti said the infiltrators do not float-up in the plains but obviously sneak through the LoC. "Let the troops increase and intensify their vigil along the LoC so that the infiltrators are not able to make it to the plains," she said and added that while the army would guard the borders, police can be handed-over the entire responsibility of dealing with the security situation in the plains. "Such a move would not only minimize the burden of internal security duties on the troops, but would, empower the civilian and democratic institutions to take on the challenge," she maintained. Addressing the convention PDP General Secretary Nizam-ud-Din Bhat blamed the National Conference for grooming and giving legitimacy to the Ikhwanis and surrendered militants by offering political space to them within the party. Bhat said NC not only gave protection to the notorious Ikhwanis like Papa Kishtwari, but also provided them political space in the organization thereby shielding their criminal acts. ‘While Papa Kishtwari was an active NC worker’, some other Ikhwanis were even nominated even to the highest legislative bodies directly or indirectly by the NC, Bhat said and asserted that the NC leadership can't hoodwink the people now by apologizing for the heinous crimes committed by their Ikhwani cohorts, against the people of Kashmir. "The NC leaders go around now shedding crocodile tears over the anti-people acts of their Ikhwani cadres," he said and added that the people can't be befooled by such cheap politics now.
