| BJP backs Azad stand troops reduction Panthers searching reasons behind provocation | | | Jammu,May 27 :- Mainstream political parties have come up with missed reactions in response to the observations made by the Chief Minister GhulamNabi Azad over the level of infiltration, PDP sponsored demand for reduction in the level of troops etc. While the state unit of the BJP has endorsed the statement of Chief Ministerin which he had ruled out immediate reduction in troops, the Panthers Party has expressed measured support to him. Leader of the Panthers Party in the state Assembly,Mr Harsh Dev Singh, said today "if the Prime Minister has constituted a committee of experts to examine the issue of withdrawal of troops from the civilian areas in Jammu and Kashmir what had prompted the Chief Minister to rule out the possibility of demilitarisation." He said Mr Azad should not have commented on the issue when the committee was in the process of examining it. Mr Harsh Dev Singh,at the same time, supported the Chief Minister's argument opposing withdrawal of troops and said that the time was not ripe for it.The Panthers Party leader said that "we too do not want the level of militancy to escalate if troops were withdrawn." A senior BJP leader,Dr Nirmal Singh, said "our party supports the Chief Minister's observation." He said "the issue of demilitarisation should be left to the Army and not to be decided by political leaders adding this not a political issue but related to the security of the state." He said withdrawal of troops, relocation or deinduction of the forces should be left to the Army commanders. However,Democratic Freedom Party Chief,Mr Shabir Ahmed Shah, said that "I do not subscribe to the views of Mr Azad." He said once the troops were withdrawn incidents of human rights violations would become a thing of history." Mr Shah said that "the demand for demilitarisation was peoples'demand and it had received support from across the border." He added withdrawal of troops was necessary for improving the pace of ongoing India-Pakistan dialogue and confidence building measures. General secretary of PDP,Mr Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, said that "by expressing his opinion on the issue of withdrawal of troops the Chief Minister could influence the deliberations by the members of the expert panel constituted by the Prime Minister. He said that "our demand for cut in the size of troops in civilian areas had no ulterior motives. We want the atmosphere to become very conducive for working out an amicable settlement of the Kashmir issue." Mr Bhat wanted the committee, constituted by the Prime Minister,to base its recommendations on the political inputs from Kashmir.
