| Controversy over troop reduction a great setback to peace process: Omar | | |
Poonch, May 2 Accusing Peoples Democratic Party of complicating the issue of Troop's reduction in the state in a bid to create Media hype, National Conference president, Mr. Omar Abdullah today said that the controversy over the issue has come as a great set back to the peace process. Lambasting PDP for using the issue of withdrawal of troops as a tool for playing vote politics, he said after creating much media hype it agreed for constituting a committee to report on the matter. He said that the controversy has not only pushed the issue of troop's reduction on back burner, but also hampered the possibility of an early decision on the matter. He said recent statements coming from central Congress leadership and Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad, ruling out any troop's reduction indicates that the coalition partners are exploiting the public sentiments for gaining political mileage. Addressing a public rally at historical Poonch Township, Mr. Abdullah said constitution of a committee has not only complicated the issue but also tied the hands of local authorities here, who now have to go to Delhi for seeking suggestion on the matters which could otherwise be decided at district level. Describing the demand raised by PDP as more a political stunt then a conviction; he said all the media hype created by the party was a move to gain political mileage. He said all this was done without bothering about the sentiments of the people. Omar said PDP leadership staged a political drama and even threatened to quit from the coalition if their demand was not conceded to--- "However when they realized that Government of India would not budge to the pressure, they settled down on constitution of a committee to save their face". On their return from Delhi they again claimed that the Committee was constituted on their instance only to befool people, Omar said, questioning "how long PDP would continue to play with the sentiments of people." Describing all its moves as part of vote politics, Mr. Abdullah said by raising such issues, PDP is trying to divide people on regional, communal, caste, lingual and ethnic lines. He said the controversies created in the backdrop of the conflict between PDP and Congress leadership over the issue has come as a great set back to the peace process initiated by Governments of India and Pakistan.
