| Board of doctors constituted for conducting postmortem | | Death of a patient sparks off protest in GMC | | Jammu | May 27 Death of a patient admitted in the Government Medical College here for past several days sparked off strong protests against the negligence and insensitive behavior of doctors posted there. The trouble started when Naresh Kumar, who was admitted in the hospital on May 23 after he suffered head injuries during a fall from house stairs, died here today for want of timely treatment. Crest fallen, hapless relatives gathered outside the emergency ward of the hospital and shouted slogans holding Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Health Minister Mangat Ram Sharma responsible for the negligent behavior of the doctors. They also gave vent to their ire against the hospital authorities for failing to come to their rescue when they needed their help. Bacchan Lal, father of Naresh Kumar, while leveling certain charges against the doctors said ‘that his young son died due to sheer negligence of the doctors and their greedy nature. He said when he admitted his son on May 23 he was asked to shift the patient to a private clinic where the same treatment would cost him Rs 25000. I was told by one of the doctors here that the hospital does not have sufficient infrastructural support and it was not possible to operate his son in the GMC. Bacchan Lal said that they were demanding hefty amount to conduct similar operations in private clinics, which they had already refused to carry out in absence of necessary facilities in GMC. He has demanded judicial inquiry into the negligence of the doctors and demanded stern action against the erring doctors who despite knowing the seriousness of the head injury delayed the treatment and also demanded money from him. Bacchan Lal today apprised the Chief Minister, Health Minister and Principal Government medical college about the incident. Meanwhile, the hospital authorities have denied all these allegations saying that none of the doctors have demanded any money from the poor patient. In the meantime the government has constituted a board of doctors to conduct a postmortem on Monday and directed the Principal GMC to punish the guilty doctors after establishing their negligence.
