| Cong-PDP conflict enters crucial phase | | |
Jammu, May 28, The year-long confrontation between the Congress and the PDP, main partners in the ruling coalition, has entered a critical phase over outright rejection of PDP’s demand for withdrawal of troops from the valley. The PDP leaders accuse the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, PCC President Peerzada Mohd Sayeed, and Party vice-president, Abdul Gani Vakil, of airing their strong views in public against withdrawal of troops when the committee, constituted by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, was in the process of examining the issue. Congress spokesman, Ravinder Sharma, said today “in the light of the security situation and on the basis of the intelligence inputs, suggesting increase in infiltration from across the LOC, we have been opposing the PDP’s demand for demilitarization. In reply to a question whether the Congress was planning to snap ties with the PDP, as was indicated by the PCC chief in Srinagar, Sharma said “Peerzada Mohd.Sayed has denied having said that the Congress will throw out the PDP from the coalition Government.” The spokesman said “it is for the party high command to take a decision on the matter.” He said the PDP should understand ground realities and postpone its demand for withdrawal of troops. On the other hand several PDP leaders blamed the Congress for trying to influence the deliberations of the committee and the expert panel. Asked whether the PDP was preparing for quitting the coalition Government a senior PDP leader said “less than 14 months are left for the next Assembly poll and we favour the present political arrangement to continue.” In reply to another question “he said contesting the next election in collaboration with the congress depended on the day to day situation. If we feel the Congress leaders in the state were hitting the PDP below its belt there will be no need to have an electoral understanding or arrangement.” Meanwhile, inside reports said that the PDP patron, Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, had planned to visit Delhi last week for fresh discussion with those who matter in the union capital on the party’s demand on withdrawal of troops. He postponed the visit in the light of the campaign the state unit of the Congress had launched against him and his party. He, instead, advised his daughter, Mehboob Mufti, PDP Chief, to meet important central leaders in Delhi. These reports said that after her secret meetings Mehbooba was satisfied with the discussion she had with the senior Congress leaders. These reports said that in case the state Congress leaders pepped up their anti-PDP campaign the Mufti may be forced to reconsider his decision to keep the coalition Government in tact. According to these reports, Mehbooba has urged senior Congress functionaries in Delhi to initiate steps so that the Congress leaders in Jammu and Kashmir desisted from campaigning against the PDP
