Poonch-Rajouri presents depressing picture: Omar
'People denied even basic facilities'
5/29/2007 12:02:09 AM

Poonch, May 28
National Conference president and Member Parliament Omar Abdullah has said that the people of Border districts of Poonch and Rajouri are living a miserable life as coalition government has failed to provide them even the basic facilities, like water, power and road connectivity.
NC President was addressing a public meeting on the last leg of his ten day tour at Dhar Gloon village of Mendhar.
He said the pathetic condition of people in far off areas indicates that Government have completely relinquished its responsibility towards the vital sectors of governance like health, education, water, road connectivity and power.
The miserable condition of people in the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri was a litmus test for the failure of the government in reaching out people living in far flung areas, Abdullah said.
Describing four and a half year coalition rule as era of mis-governance and corruption, Abdullah said that while parties in power are after their vested interests, important decisions taken in Board meetings and state legislature for public welfare are either being altogether ignored or implemented half heartedly.
The same is evident from the awful condition of roads, educational and health institutions in far flung areas, Omar said adding "on seeing the condition of far off areas one wonders where all the money has gone"
Regretting huge burden put on the common man by increasing the power tariff, Omar said during NC regime, people were charged Rs 50 to 100 while today power fare has been increased to two hundred to three hundred. He said rising prices of essential commodities have already broken the back of masses and charging of such a big amount on the name of power tariff has further added to their woes.
He said that National Conference wants Jammu and Kashmir to remain as a single entity and it will never allow division on the basis of ethnical or regional identity. He said "we have always favored uniform development of all the regions wherein lies the key for sustained economic growth of the state'.
Omar said that NC is for simultaneous development of all areas to remove the sense of alienation from the minds of people and added that the prosperity of the state lies only in uniform development of all the regions.
Criticizing the policies of the coalition government, NC president said that the developmental scenario in far flung areas is grim which speaks volumes about the tall claims being made by the alliance partners. He said instead of working for general good, each alliance partner is busy in promoting its party agenda thus leaving the general masses in a lurch.
Others who spoke on the occasion included, Provincial president Ajay Sadhotra, Provincial Secretary, Sheikh Bashir Ahmad, MLAs Mohammad Aslam, Javid Rana, Rashpal Singh and MLC Devender Singh Rana.
