| Army loses Lt Col in Bandipore battle | | |
SRINAGAR June 30 : Four persons including one Lieutenant Colonel of 15 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), two militants of Laskar-e-Toiba (LeT) and one unidentified man, were killed in Bandipore encounter, Army said.
Army spokesperson Col Juneja said that, after receiving a tip off, 90 Bn of Border Security Forces (BSF) launched a search operation at 0815 hours in the shopping complex in Nowpora Market of Bandipore area of Kashmir where LeT militants had taken a refuge in, subsequently an encounter broke out in which two militants got killed. Army too lost an officer of 15 RR Lt Col V K Chauhan in the gun battle while as one constable of 90 Bn BSF was wounded.
Unconfirmed reports, however, said that the unidentified body in the encounter belonged to the owner of the house.
"Militants hiding on the top floor of the shopping complex opened fire on seeing the search party approaching. Lt Col V K Chauhan of 15 RR and constable P Swamy of 90 Bn BSF were injured. Soon the officer ( Lt Col) succumbed to his injuries and achieved martyrdom," a statement issued by Army said.
The encounter ended at 1300 hours, army said. Army also claimed to have recovered two AK rifles and one pistol besides huge cache of arms and ammunition from the encounter site. |
