Mufti losing clout in Delhi after stretching demilitarization demand
5/29/2007 11:49:12 PM

Jammu,May 29
The quantum of support the PDP
leadership,especially Mufti Mohd.Sayeed,had been
getting from the
central Government and the Congress
High Command has been dwindling after the Mufti and his
daughter,Ms Mehbooba Mufti, continued to stretch the
demand for demilitarisation beyond a reasonable
proportion.
Highly placed informed sources said that Chief
Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, has regained the ground
which he had lost as far as the support from the
Congress High Command was concerned. In fact Mr Azad is
said to have staged a coup against the Mufti in the
corridors of power in Delhi when his arguments against demilitarisation were
accepted by senior
party leaders,including Ms Sonia
Gandhi.
The sources said that when Azad explained to men who
matter in Delhi that by stretching his demand for
demilitarisation Mufti Mohd.Sayeed had allowed an
opportunity for the ruling coalition opponents in
enjoying the conflict between the two main partners
over a vital issue. He is said to have informed the Congress
High Command that by raking up the demand for
withdrawal of troops it had sent wrong signals across
Kashmir forcing people to believe that the
Congress
alone was against demilitarisation.
No doubt the Mufti has lost his clout in Delhi,he
still is treated as a safe bet for India's interests
in Kashmir.A section of senior Congress
leaders, including the Prime Minister, are said to be in
favour of the ruling coalition to continue till the
next election, scheduled to be held somewhere in
September-October 2008.
For them a weakened Congress could allow the National
Conference to gain political and electoral
mileage.Hence opinion favours the present political
arrangement to continue.Informed sources said that a
signal has emanated from Delhi suggesting to Mufti
Mohd.Sayeed to restrain his party leaders, especially
his daughter, from articulating vehemently in favour of
demilitarisation.
However,PDP leaders blame the Congrtess
leaders, especially Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, for provoking
confrontation between the two main coalition
partners. They said had not the Chief Minister and his
cronies aired their views
against demilitarisation
publicly, much before the committee constituted by the
Prime Minister had completed full review of the
situation, things would have not gone so bad.
One senior PDP leader said withdrawal of troops was
a demand and we have been explaining to the people and
to the centre the need for it.He said "we had accepted
the Prime Minister's decision on constituting the
committees for exmaning the ground realities in the
light of our demand for withdrawal of troops, repeal of
Armed Forces Special Powers Act and vacation of
orchards by the troops."He said if the Congress in
Kashmir was keen to snap ties with the PDP "we are ready."(
