NEW DELHI, MAY 30 With alliance partners Congress and PDP having taken divergent stands on troop cut in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is here meeting senior Central leaders apprising them about the militancy situation in the state. Azad met the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil for an hour and discussed the situation in the state and the rise in infiltration activities from across the border, a figure according to the security agencies, has doubled from January to April compared to the corresponding period last year. The Chief Minister shared the recent minutes of the meetings of the Unified Headquarters chaired by him with the Home Minister. Security agencies had warned that there could a spurt in militant activities in the state in view of the increase in political activities by both mainstream politicians and separatists, official sources said. The war of words between the two alliance partner over demilitarisation in the state intensified last week with Azad ruling out any troops reduction and the junior alliance partner supremo Mehbooba Mufti warning that "offhand remarks" could "jeopardise" the peace process in Kashmir. The Chief Minister informed Patil that 12 infiltration attempts have been made in this month alone. Azad also discussed the arrangements being made for the forthcoming annual Amarnath Yatra, for which the registration is scheduled to begin soon. The state would require additional forces for smooth conduct of the annual pilgrimage, the sources said.
