| Centre releases Rs, 7 lakh to J&K NGO for prevention of alcoholism | | | Jammu, May 31 The Centre has released Rs.7.17 lakhs during the last fiscal up to ending December 2006 to a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) of the State namely "Society For The Promotion Of Youth & Masses", Mashwara Hospital, Akhnoor Road, Jammu, under the scheme for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drugs) Abuse. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had allocated an amount of Rs.30 crore for the scheme during the last financial year. Of this, Rs. 22.35 crore was released to 242 voluntary organizations/ NGOs till December, 2006 to support the ongoing programmes under the scheme. The Ministry is assisting around 346 Voluntary Organizations that are running 390 Treatment-cum-Rehabilitation Centres and 30 counseling and Awareness Centres. The Scheme for Preventions of Alcoholism and Substance (Drugs) Abuse aims at providing a whole range of services including awareness generation, identification, treatment and rehabilitation of alcoholics and drug addicts through voluntary organizations. Under the scheme, grant-in-aid to the extent of 90 per cent of the approved budget is released to the eligible NGO for running Treatment-cum-Rehabilitation Centres, Drug Awareness, Counseling and Assistance Centres, Workplace Prevention Programme and for conducting De-Addiction Camp.
