| Gujjars express solidarity with community in Rajasthan | | |
JAMMU, MAY 31 An outfit representing Gujjars in Jammu and Kashmir today condemned the killing of community members during police firing in Rajasthan and asked the Centre to provide quick ex-gratia relief to the families of those killed in the agitation. "We strongly condemned the killings of innocent people of Gujjar community by police in Dausa and other places of Rajasthan who were demanding inclusion of the community in ST category," the leaders of Jammu and Kashmir Gujjar United Front told reporters here. Terming the police action as most "barbarious, inhuman and against the spirit of democracy," Secretary General of the Front Shah Mohammad Choudhary held the Rajasthan government squarely responsible for the killing of Gujjars. BJP government in Rajasthan had promised to recommend to the Centre inclusion of Gujjars in scheduled tribe category in the previous elections, but now the state government has back tracked from its commitment, another Gujjar leader Haji Mohammad Hussain said. Gujjar leaders appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to provide quick ex-gratia relief to the kith and kin of those killed in police firing in Rajasthan.
