| AEC celebrates its 60th anniversary | | | Udhampur, June 01- The 60th anniversary of Army Educational Corps (AEC) was celebrated here today. In Northern Command theatre, the Corps is running a chain of human resource development centres to provide necessary educational, professional and language training to the troops in the operational environment professional and language training for troops. The Courses range from promotion-linked educational courses at various levels, Map Reading training, Computer awareness programme to language training in both foreign and regional languages. Soldiers are also put through coaching to help them acquire a commission in Army Cadet College. In addition, the IGNOU Army Educational Project extends the facility of distance Education to all Army personnel in keeping with the concept of ‘education-at-your-doorstep’. There are a total of five Study Centres. The Comd HRDC is also an Accredited Institution of the National Institute of Open Schooling. The Hindi Cell of the HQ Command works for the implementation of official language policies and provides translation services, as well. The good work done by the AEC in human resource development in the Army has been lauded by one and all. Lt Gen HS Panag, AVSM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command, felicitated all ranks of the AEC on the auspicious occasion of their Corps Day. The need for educational training in developing the military potential of the soldier in modern war was recognized during World War I, and as a sequel the British Government in India sanctioned the raising of an Army Educational Corps (AEC) on 15 June 1920 (later the RAEC) as a self-contained organization. Two schools of Army Education (later merged at Belgaum in 1924) were also established the same year in Wellington and Belgaum. An Indian Army Educational Corps was raised around the same time, but disbanded soon after as part of post-war economy, and all educational activities were placed under the responsibility of the British AEC. Sir Auchinleek, the then Commander-in-Chief in India, proposed its revival in 1944 and the Army Educational Corps was finally raised on June 1, 1947. The requirement is no longer to educate an illiterate soldier but to build further on the education of a soldier in order to make him fit to handle the complex modern military equipment as well as function in the hi-tech combat environment. The Corps is also responsible for military music and has rendered yeomen service in raising the standard of Army Bonds.
