Learn mountaineering campaign initiated by Rajiv Saumitra | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 2: The world's well known mountaineer & geography teacher Rajiv Saumitra hoisted India's tricolour at Antarctica's highest peak Mount Vinson (4892 m) recently. Before conquering Mount Vinson he reached the extreme point of the earth i.e. South Pole - 90 Degree South & hoisted India's national flag there. According to press release, after returning to India Rajiv Saumitra initiated "Learn Mountaineering campaign". He said that mountaineering has been one of most adventurous sport and has lured many Indians, especially those like me, who want to get away from the high-stress, capital-intensive ecosystems in which we live. It is a probably the best tool to reconnect with and re-discover not just ones own self but also mother nature which for most of us is just visuals we see on channels like the National Geographic. According to Rajiv Saumitra, mountaineering is not just a sport for youth and those going through middle-age but also a sport that can immensely help our children evolve into far better, more aware and healthier human beings. In fact children are far more agile and natural mountaineers than us adults and it is sheer pleasure seeing them climb . This is one of the costly sport & our government gives very little financial help in comparison with other countries. I am putting my best efforts to bring it to the notice of the central, states Governments & other organizations and also whatever I can for this initiative. He further added that if people were aware & had some experience of mountaineering & disaster management then many lives would have been saved during Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand's Kedarnath floods. Floods, cloud burst and landslides are very common in Mountain & hill areas. During such incidents people often look upon for help from Government, army & police . Awareness of some key factors of mountaineering can save many lives during disaster. |
