| People in North 'face' the heat, 10 more die | | |
New Delhi, June 3
As mercury soared to unbearable levels across North India today, people mostly remained indoors to escape from the scorching sun with the sweltering heat conditions claiming 10 more lives in Uttar Pradesh, raising the toll since the onset of summers to 22.
Roads wore a deserted look with few vehicles plying and people preferring to remain indoors on a Sunday that proved to be a blessing in disguise for many.
People were also seen making a beeline before fruit and soft drink stalls besides rushing to shaded places for shelter.
Ten people died due to torrid heat in Uttar Pradesh, as state capital Lucknow experienced the summer's hottest day with mercury soaring to 44.6 degree Celsius.
Three heat-related deaths were reported from Kanpur since yesterday, two each from Varanasi and Kaushambi and one each from Banda, Chitrakoot and Orai districts.
The temple city of Varanasi also witnessed the hottest day this summer, breaking a 10-year record with 46.2 degrees. It was also the hottest place in entire North India.
The heat wave continued to sweep most parts of Haryana and Punjab, with Hisar registering a high of 45.2 degrees.
Searing heat prevailed in Chandigarh, which witnessed the season's hottest day as mercury climbed to 43.4 degrees, three notches above normal. Amritsar in Punjab recorded a high of 43 degree Celsius, three above normal. In Patiala, the maximum settled at 43.5 degrees, up two than normal.
Delhites also experienced another hot day with mercury settling at 44 degrees, 0.1 notch less than yesterday's 44.1 degrees, which was the seasons’ highest.
