6/4/2007 12:37:57 AM

SRINAGAR, JUNE 3
Bihar clinched the first Inter-State Golf Championship pushing the hosts Jammu and Kashmir as runners up in the scintillating event at Royal Springs Golf Course here today.
In partially cloudy weather conditions, morning fog on the Zabarwan hills and lush green 18-hole course on the banks of Dal lake, the golfers from the guest state felt mesmerized with a prominent golfer aptly remarking 'it is mesmerizing, a dreamland and a wonder course for any golfer to feel elated for enjoying this great moment'.
Appreciating the mood of the event, Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S K Sinha, who along with Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad opened the tournament at tee-off, said that this is the first of the series to invite other states for playing golf on Kashmir turf. This will not only foster camaraderie but also promote the valley as the destination for the world golfers.
Supporting his versatile speech with recalling anecdotes, Governor dwelt on various tournaments played between his home state and Nepal where he served as Indian Ambassador but played for the host country. 'Here I feel elated to join Chief Minister in representing Jammu and Kashmir against my home state'. He hurriedly added in a lighter vein that having been away from Bihar for a long, he is now NRB (Non Resident Bihari).
He welcomed the golfers and said that this is yet another event after the tournament of parliamentarians hosted by Chief Minister last year.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister said that Kashmir is an international tourist destination with scenic bounty and excellent climate. The valley has emerged as a favourite destination for adventure, pilgrim, leisure and conventional tourism, he said, adding that golf is emerging as a prime attraction. He also noted with satisfaction that local youth have been evincing keen interest in the game, which sometime back used to be perceived as elites' game. 'Golf is really catching up with our new generation', he observed.
On Royal Springs Golf Course, Mr. Azad said that the course being of an international standard holds a promise and future for sports tourism.
The Chief Minister thanked Mr. Devinder Rana, Managing Director Jamkash Vehicleades Pvt. Ltd. for sponsoring the event and hoped that in near future similar tournaments would be hosted by him at Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
