Nearly 13000 SC students benefited under PMS

Jammu June 4 Under the Centrally sponsored scheme of Post-Matric Scholarship (PMS) to students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Centre has assisted 12,839 students from J&K State during the last fiscal till December last. During this period, the Centre has provided financial assistance of Rs.111.71 lakh to J&K for implementation of the Scheme.
The financial assistance is provided to the students belonging to the Scheduled Castes for pursuing studies beyond Matriculation in recognized institutions. Maintenance allowance, reimbursement of compulsory non-refundable fees charged by the Institutions, thesis typing/printing charges, study tour charges in case of professional courses, book allowance for students pursuing correspondence courses and additional provisions for students with disabilities are covered under the Scheme.
The scholarship is disbursed through the respective State Governments and Union Territory Administrations and 100% central assistance is provided to them over and above their committed liability.
The Scheme presently covers nearly 30 lakh students annually and the coverage has been growing at a considerable rate. During the financial year 2002-03, Central assistance to the tune of Rs.153.05 crore was released to States/UTs benefiting nearly 19 lakh SC students. In the year 2003-04, nearly 20 lakh SC students got benefited by the Central assistance of Rs. 264.99 crore. Central assistance of Rs.330.27 crore was released during the financial year 2004-05 which helped 24 lakh SC students in the country in pursuing their studies. Similarly over 25 lakh SC students got benefited by the central assistance of Rs. 548.02 crores during 2005-06 while during the last fiscal till 31st December, 2006, Centre released a financial assistance of Rs. 265.20 crores to the States and UTs under the Scheme thereby benefiting nearly 30 lakh SC students across the country
