| Multi dimensions of Raksha Bhandan | | editorial | |
On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bhandhan the Early Times has already extended its greetings to all the brothers and sisters among its readers. The festival of threads is symbol of love between the brother and the sister, with the sisters while tying Rakhis on the wrists of their brothers pray for their long life, well being and prosperity. On the other hands the brothers take the solemn pledge the honor and dignity of their sisters against any onslaught and discomfort and distress. The day is symbolic of the determination on the part of the males in the society to uphold the honor of females. This legacy and tradition has come down to the modern generation from centuries together from their forfathers. It is heartening that despite our civilization having undergone a great change. And the life style of Indians becoming more and more Westernised, the sanctity of the function of Raksha Bhandhan and for that matter all our religious and social functions have not got polluted or diluted. Hindus almost all over India and even those settled abroad celebrate our traditional festivals and religious ceremonies with traditional ferver and enthusism. However it is a matter of concern that instead of celebrating our functions with simplicity, austerity, but with sanctity with all the spirit of the occasion, lately these are being observed with all the fanfare, display of lavishness and even bazaree hulla gulla. All these mar the real spirit of the occasion. While the substance is missing only external form continues to be there. While celebrating Raksha Bhandhan, let us pause and analyse how far our commitment to protect the honor and dignity of the females is firm and solid. It is only in certain parts of the country that Raksha Bhandhan symbolisis the pious relationship between the brothers and sisters and brothers taking the pledge to protect their sisters against all odds. In some other parts of the country the Brahmans tie rakhi on the wrist of the khasrtriys with the latter taking the pledge to protect the farmer. Even the weaker sections of the people tie rakhi on the wrist stronger and the latter pledgeing to protect the former. In olden times when the male warriors would leave for the battle field, their wife's or other womemfolk would tie the rakhi on the wrists of the warriors, as a symbol of prayer for their victory in the war, whereas the later would pledge for protection of the honour of the motherland. Thus the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bhandhan has multi dimensional many festation. In today's context when the old caste system with defined jobs and professions no more hold good, n this day we all should take the solemn pledge to protect and safe guard the honour and prestiage of our country as well as uphold the higher values of life as well as serve the humanity to the best of our capacity.
