| Environmental week celebrations take off | | Qazi for maintaining states eco-balance | |
Srinagar, June 05 Minister for Forests, Environment Housing and Urban Development Qazi Mohammad Afzal has stressed of formulating integrated action plans for curtailing human induced concentration of green house gases in atmosphere and reducing dependence on fossil fuels at global level. The minister was speaking at a function organized by the Directorate of Ecology Environment and Remote Sensing, J&K in connection with celebration of environmental week 2007 on the topic "Melting ice-A Hot topic" held at Women's Colleges, MA Road, Srinagar today. Qazi Afzal said that our state which was world famous for its clean and pollution free environment is today threatened with increasing pollutions due to industrialization, adverse climate changes, defective agriculture practices and other constructional activities. Qazi said that collective efforts are needed to maintain clean environment and the natural resources for a healthy eco-system. He said that the selfish approach of the man kind has not only degraded the wealth of natural resources but also posed a threat to the environment that has left adverse effects on its self. He said that a symbiotic relationship between human and natural resources is imp0erative for arresting the increasing environmental pollution. The Minister appealed the general people to involve themselves in the maintenance of clean environment and asked the student community to register them selves under green clubs for launching a drive against environmental pollution in the state. He said that clean and healthy environment is essential for attracting more and more tourists towards our state. He also said that the water bodies of the state that have been put to a threat by the environment pollution need to be preserved and protected. Commissioner and Secretary, Forests Mr. Attal Dullo, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Mr. Irshad Ahmed Khan, Chairman Pollution Control Board Mr. R.D. Tiwari, Director Environment Mr. Shamim Ahmed Khan and Principal, Women's College M.A. Road, Srinagar Mrs. Zeenat Ara also spoke on the topic. Later, the Minister distributed prizes among the participants students and he also announced Rs.10,000 as cash award to those students who have presented as alternative to pollythene bags. A colorful cultural programme and skits with regard to environment has been presented by the students of different schools on the occasion. Among others, Director Forest Protection Force Mr. Vinod Ranzan, Managing Director State Forest Cooperation, Mr. Aijaz Ahmed Bhat, Director Social forestry Mr. Shafaat Ahmed, Teachers students and senior officers of the various departments were present on the occasion.
