Dilawar for quality improvement of Horticulture produce

SRINAGAR, JUNE 05
- Minister for Horticulture and Tourism Mr. Mohammad Dilawar Mir has called for diversification in Horticulture with quality improvement adding that it was imperative to withstand stiff market competition in liberal world trade regime. This would also help to increase per unit income of the growers for improving their livelihood, the Minister added.
Speaking at the inaugural session of 2-days Buyer-Seller meet cum conference on Apple, temperate fruits and nuts of Jammu and Kashmir here today, the Minister asked the agriculture scientists to take the research to the door steps of the farmers to increase production and productivity in a big way.
The seminar has been organized by the Indian Society of Agri-business professionals and Apple Growers Association of India in collaboration with National Horticulture Board and APEDA.
MLA and State Secretary CPI(M) Mr. Mohammad Yousaf Tarigami, Chairman All India Fruit Growers Association Mr. Ravinder Chouhan, Deputy Director NHB Mr. D. P. Singh, Director Horticulture Planning & Marketing Mr. Showkat Ahmad Zargar, representative of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences & Technology Kashmir (SKUAST), fruit growers and corporators from other parts of the country were also present on the occasion.
The Minister urged for introducing latest farming technologies in a big way adding that pre-cooling and post harvest management need to be put in place immediately to boost Horticulture Industry on modern lines.
The Minister said that government has tied up with J&K Bank for establishing cold storages in the nook and corner of the state involving an amount of Rs. 1200 crore. The Minister also called upon the fruit growers, traders and transporters to work in unison and cooperation for the overall betterment of the Horticulture industry adding that both are two wheels of the system and should watch each other's interests. While extending his thanks to NHB for organizing the event, the Minister hoped that recommendations of the seminar would prove beneficial for the horticulture sector in the state. He said the event would provide an opportunity to the growers to interact and share experience with each other.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Tarigami urged for implementation of the recommendations of the House Committee on Horticulture scenario for the development of this vital sector of economy. He called for enforcing stringent quality control measures to provide standard quality inputs to the growers. He also urged for re-evaluation of ongoing Technology Mission so that it could be implemented effectively. He also sought up gradation of facilities in various fruit mandies in the state.
The Minister later inspected the stalls put up in connection with Buyer-Seller meet.
