‘Demand fraught with aggravating regional disparities’ Nirmal Singh
BJP flays Sajjad Lone’s demand for revoking KAS selection list
6/8/2007 12:48:43 AM

Jammu, June 7
The State unit of the BJP has expressed its deep amazement over the Peoples’ Conference Chief, Sajjad Lone’s, threat of gheaoring Civil Secretariat and start civil disobedience movement if the recently released list of candidates selected in the Kashmir Administrative Services (KAS) was not revoked and more job avenues were not created for educated youth in the Kashmir valley.
Lone told media men in Srinagar today that candidates from the Jammu region had shared more seats in the KAS selection list which should be revoked immediately so that more candidates from the Kashmir Valley were included in the revised list .He also said that Kashmiris deserved better share in the Government jobs.
A senior BJP leader Dr Nirmal Singh said that the allegation of Lone regarding Jammuites having taken a lion’s share in the KAS selected list and demand for more jobs for Kashmiris has no justification. He said candidates usually get selected in the KAS cadre through a competitive examination.
Dr Singh said that Lone’s demand for more share for Kashmiris in Government jobs was fraught with dangers of further aggravating the level of regional disparities and imbalance. He said that already 95 per cent posts, right from class IV to the Secretary level in the Civil Secretariat are in the hands of Kashmiris.
The BJP leader said “during the last three decades we have been clamoring against growing regional discrimination.” He said the BJP has, even during the roundtable conferences, pleaded for evolving a statutory mechanism for distribution of jobs equally between the regions and Jammu and Kashmir. The same mechanism should keep the interests of people of Ladakh also in mind, he added..
He said that already the level of mistrust of people of one region against the other has increased and suggested that to end regional imbalance and mistrust, the Government should introduce provincial cadre posts and district cadre posts. If it was done, he added, an employee of one province need not be shifted to another province.
Dr Nirmal Singh said that besides, evolving a suitable mechanism for ending hegemony of employees of one region over the other, there was need for equal devolution of funds in the Jammu and Kashmir regions. During the last 50 years people in the Jammu region have received a step motherly treatment as far as allocation of funds for various development projects were concerned .He stated that the result of this discrimination was that the successive Governments had ensured that there was better road connectivity in the Kashmir Valley than in the Jammu region.
He said the Government has been earmarking bigger quantum of funds for the development of roads, lakes, parks, tourist resorts in the Kashmir Valley than in the Jammu region.
