| Seminar on “Role of Forests in climate change mitigation” held at SKICC | | | Srinagar, June 07 –While speaking at one day state level seminar on “Role of Forests in climate change Mitigation” organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department at SKICC, Chief Secretary C. Phunsog today said that global adverse climate change happening needs to be given prime most attention so that right steps are taken in time to protect wiping of humanity from the surface of earth. He said that our energy requirement needs to be met with alternative sources of energy and stopping excessive use of fossil fuels like carbon which is the prime cause for global warming. He said that climate change theory suggests that warming of the over all environments could lead to a variety of changes in the pattern of Earth’s climate. He said that forests cover is almost one third of the Earth’s Bio-mass, representing the most sustainable reservoir of terrestrial biological diversity and this source has the capacity to reduce the green house gas emissions, apart from acting as carbon sink and plays a vital role in maintaining the natural climate changes. He said in the years ahead, the Kyoto protocol will also offer opportunities for improving environmental and social conditions in the World. Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Secretary Forests Atal Dulloo said that there is threat to many natural systems by regional climate changes, particularly temperature increases. He said vibrant and healthy forests are an effective tool to combat global warning effects and its mitigation. On this occasion, Dulloo also released two news letters of forest department. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Irshad Ahmed Khan also spoke on the occasion. The inaugural session was followed by presentation of papers by the Resource persons in two technical sessions. Among others, Chief Conservator of Forests, Kashmir Abdul Razak, Director Forest Protection Force Vinod Ranjan, Director Social Forestry Shafat Ahmed, Director Environment Shamim Ahmed Khan, Chief Conservator of Forests, Jammu Abhay Kumar, Managing Director State Forest Corporation Aijaz Ahmed Bhat, NGO’s and experts of various departments were present on the occasion.
