| Water scarcity hits Jammu, people look for water tankers to get a bucket full of water | | | Munish Gupta Jammu, June7 Just two days after when the whole world observed the World Environment Day-2007, Jammuites felt the heat of the theme of the topic of the year 2007.i.e. Melting Ice- a Hot Topic! Majority of the outskirts and West Jammu including some parts of the walled city suffered the water scarcity. Few days ago since the squall showing atypical equality within the two regions hit both Jammu and Kashmir affected the power supply which resultantly ended up in acute shortage of drinking water. Tanker-owners are making an easy buck as residents of most of the new colonies skirting the main town are dependent on them for their requirement of potable water, some lamented. Though the PHE Department itself is supplying water through tankers in many areas of Jammu West since the collapse of the Sitlie Filtration Project at Sitlie near Nagrota yet people in many area complained about water shortage. Not to talk of the suburb locations but some localities of the posh colonies namely Gandhi Nagar and Trikuta Nagar also faced the bone dry taps for many days and now have become dependent upon the water tanker supply system. It has now become routine affairs that hardly the Jammu is hit by a thunderstorm or windy day/squall, under the special instructions to prevent any eventuality the PDD Department snaps its supplies, which affects the water supply also. It took atleast two to three days to bring the system to back to the track. People in the various localities like Sainik Colony, Channi, Narwal and Bhatindi on the outskirts of the city have totally become dependent on the tank supply system. Sarita Bali housewife residing in Sainik Colony, Sector 7 rued that the water supply in this area is already on an alternative basis and now the residents who had small storage tanks are facing problems. She also said that while a water tanker is sold around Rs 450 in the town and Rs 500 outside by the private water tanker suppliers but some even are ready to pay for water fail to get this supply having their houses being out of connecting roads or in by-lanes of old city. It is to mention that locals of various 13 localities around Roop Nagar Colony , Gourakh Nagar, New Plot and Rehari are already facing an acute shortage of drinking water due to the topography of the area. Every now and then the protests in the said assembly segment Jammu West have been staged demanding regular water supply. Jammuites now are anchoring their hopes on the newly proposed master plan to cover the city under better supply of drinking water to give respite to people living ‘water shadow’ zones and run to get a bucket fill of water from the water tanker arrived in their area.
