| Panthers leadershio demand revision of electoral rolls | | | Jammu, June 08 Top leadership of the Jammu and Kashmir Panthers Party has now raised a demand for timely completion of fresh revision of electoral rolls ahead of 2008 Assembly polls. Suggesting that the fresh revision of the electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir should be completed within next six months time Leader of the Panthers Party in the state Legislature, Mr Harsh Dev Singh, a former Minister for Education, said today "the Election Commission should start fresh revision of the list of voters for the 87 Constituencies in the state right now so that people could go through it at least six months before the polling." Harsh Dev Singh said that in the past "summary revision of the electoral rolls were carried out with the result genuine voters were left out” adding that whenever the fresh electoral rolls were made available for public scrutiny just a fortnight before the polling dates it would leave hardly any time for filing objections and claims. The Panthers Party leader said there was need for "limiting the number of voters to 1000 in each polling station in the urban belts and to 500 in the remote rural areas." He said that this was needed to reduce the level of inconvenience caused to voters who have to wait for hours before getting a chance for casting their votes. He said that his personal experience has been that voters in rural areas have to walk more than two kms for reaching the polling stations and he has suggested to the Chief Electoral officer to increase the number of polling booths in the rural belts so that voters could cast their votes in polling stations set up Within one km radius
