| Army rescues four US tourist in Ladakh | | |
Leh, J&K, Aug 9 The Indian Army, with the help of other security agencies, today rescued two dozen foreign tourists, including four US citizens, who were marooned in Zanskar Valley of Ladakh region.
The Army spokesman said about 2,000 people have also been evacuated and shifted to tents pitched by the Army in Leh division in areas of Angling, Phayang and Chuchuit this afternoon.
The evacuation process was launched for the evacuation of the foreign tourists who were trapped in mountanious ridge of Zanskar Valley for the last few days following heavy rains in Ladakh, sources added.
Meanwhile, heavy torrential rains in Ladakh have thrown life out of gear in the region. The Army swung into action immediately and jawans from Leh, Kargil, Batalik, Nubra valley and Base Camp units took part in the rescue operation.
The Army's assistance has also been extended to the villagers of Dikshni, Hunder, Khalsar, Warshi, Darcaik, Ganasok, Archinathang, Batalik, Biamah and Slimo by providing food and medical aid to as many as 3,000 people.
With large number of arterial communication broken, the Army personnel were going on foot with food, water and medical supply and were helping the villagers in restoration of communications.
The Army personnel have successfully diverted and channelised the flood water to prevent further flooding of villages. Villagers are also being moved to safer places. Border Road Organisation (BRO) personnel are also actively involved in restoring communication to the affected regions of Ladakh.
Flood relief operations are being carried out by the Army in Ladakh. GOC of Headquarters 14 Corps visited Marhka and Fara villages in Zanskar Valley to personally monitor rescue operation and interact with villagers.
Over a tonne of food materials and medicines have been air dropped in the affected regions. The tourists, who were rescued, expressed gratitude to the Army.
