| Disaster management programme for Amarnath yatra drawn | | | PAHALGAM, JUNE 8 Emphasizing the need for environment preservation during the ensuing two-month-long Amaranth yatra; Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S K Sinha today called for maximum synergy between various agencies to ensure smooth and comfortable annual pilgrimage. Reviewing the arrangements made for this year’s yatra from the traditional route of Pahalgam, the Governor today said that adequate environmental friendly infrastructure is being raised on the twin tracks of Pahalgam and Baltal to cater to the growing pilgrim rush. He directed the concerned agencies to take all necessary measures to ensure health and hygiene in camping sites, preserve ecology and make available requisite facilities to the pilgrims. ‘Extra care will be taken that Lidder and Sindh rivers are not polluted’, he maintained. He said Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board has replaced Deep Trench Lavatories by pre-fab environmental friendly toilets and these will be supplemented at various transit camps also. Additional Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, Mr Jaipal Singh gave a presentation on the yatra from Pahalgam route, which is simultaneously commencing on 30th of this month along side Baltal subject to weather conditions. From this route, 5000 pilgrims will be permitted every day. A joint control room will start functioning at Pahalgam on 20th of June while mini control rooms will also be established at various camping locations like Mir Bazar, Nunwan, Chandanwari, Zojipal, Pissu Top, Sheshnagh, Mahagunas Top, Panjtarni and Holy Cave. Station wise deployment of staff has already been made by all the departments. In all 67 free langers would be established on this route, maximum of 14 of them at Panjtarni, 11 each at the Holy Cave and Nunwan besides nine at Chandanwari. Singh said that adequate stocks of rations, kerosene oil and LPG will be made available at all the places. These include 1545 quaintals of rice, 568 quintals of atta, 630 quaintals sugar, 189 quaintals wheat bran, 76,800 liters of k. oil and 4260 LPG cylinders. Retail outlets would be established at Mir Bazar, Nunwan, Pahalgam, Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panjtarni. For ensuring drinking water, all necessary arrangements have been made which include 165 public points and tanker services, wherever required. For this purpose, services of NGOs will also be solicited. Power Development Department and J&K Tourism Department will provide electricity through normal channels and diesel generator sets. Halogen lights would be fixed at transit and camping sites. The meteorological reports would be made available through print and electronic media on the basis of reports from Met Department on six hourly basis. To maintain health services, 17 ambulances would be kept available at base camp and other sites besides mobile teams deputed to various camping sites. The Indian System of Medicines organization will set up camps adjacent to those of the health department. 2 Assistant Surgeons and 6 para-medics will accompany the Chaddi Mubarak while Medical Aid Centres are being established at Jawahar Tunnel Zig, Main Bazar Qazigund and Vessue. For ensuring smooth telecommunication facilities, PCOs will be set up at Mir Bazar, Pahalgam, Chandanwari, Panjtarni, Shehshnag and Holy Cave. Sattellite phones would be provided at each station in case of emergencies. Fire Services has also geared up its units for the yatra duty. The ban on use of polythene/poly bags in and around Pahalgam and Nunwan will continue. Pahalgam Development Authority has expedited the track clearance programme while other departments beside SASB have stepped up infrastructure development on the track and at the camping sites. Traffic management has also been taken care of while adequate transport would be made available to pilgrim embarking on the yatra. During the meeting, the security agencies informed the Governor about the measures being taken for smooth pilgrimage. He also discussed the Disaster Management Plan with the officers attending the meeting. Earlier, the Governor, along with Principal Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, SASB, Dr Arun Kumar visited Chandanwari and Nunwan camps. He was given briefing on the infrastructure being raised by Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board and other agencies at various places. Chief Executive Officer, Pahalgam Development Authority, Mr Tuffail Mattoo gave the details about track clearance and other measures taken for the pilgrimage.
