SRINAGAR, Feb 25: Police and security forces achieved yet another success in their fight against militancy after they killed two local militants during an encounter in the South Kashmir's Shopian district.
Reports said that while one militant was killed on Tuesday night the other one got killed today. The encounter had started on Tuesday afternoon after police and security forces personnel received inputs that some militants are hiding in the Heff Shirmal village of the Shopian district. While army claimed that slain militants belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant outfit sources in the police department said that killed militants were associated with the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT). Both the slain militants were residents of Turkwangam village in the Shopian district. Reports said that four army personnel including a major were injured in the incident. They have been shifted to the army hospital at Badami Bagh in Srinagar for treatment. The search of the nearby houses and the adjoining jungle area is still in progress. A defence spokesman here said that based on specific intelligence, a joint operation was launched by Rashtriya Rifles unit and Jammu & Kashmir Police in village Heff Shirmal, five kilometers west of Shopian town. The operations resulted in elimination of two hardcore militants along with recovery of war like stores, he said. "During the late afternoon of February 24, specific intelligence about the presence of militants in Village Heff Shirmal of Shopian District was received. A joint operation was launched by Army and SOG of J&K Police. The militants were holed up in a house in the village," said the defence spokesman. The defence spokesman said that as soon as the troops closed on to the house, the militants opened heavy volume of fire from the house. This led to heavy exchange of fire and the operations lasted through the night of February 24 and 25 and today, leading to the killing of two hardcore militants.
The slain militants have been identified as Ashiq Hussain Dar and Shabir Ahmed Ganai, residents of Turkwangam village and belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit. The operations to flush out the militants from the house were conducted in such a manner that there is no collateral damage. The defence spokesman said that four army persons including an officer also sustained injuries in the gunfight. They were evacuated to Base Hospital where their condition is stable. Meanwhile, reports said that at least eight police personnel got injured in the stone pelting in the village while the searches were still going on. As soon as the news broke out that two militants have been killed a group of people started carrying out protest demonstrations in the village. The protesters were demanding that the bodies of slain militants should be handed over to them. Reports said that during the melee the protesters pelted stones on the police personnel who had converged there to pacify the group of protesters. The protests were going on in the village when last reports came in and the situation was tense in the village.
