| Modern fish pond to come up Drass | | | Kargil June 9- A modern fish farm, first of its kind in the coldest region of Drass in Kargil district, is coming up at a cost of Rs.15 lakhs while the existing fish farm Damsana is being expanded. This was revealed at a meeting convened by the Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC Kargil Haji Asgar Ali Karbalaie to review the activities of the Fisheries department in the district. The Deputy Director Fisheries told the meeting that a fish farm involving a cost of Rs.15 lakhs is coming up at Drass. The farm, first of its kind, in the sub division will have annual rearing capacity of 30000 fish. He said the department also contemplates to make extension in the existing fish farm at Damsna near Panikhar by acquiring another 19 kanals of land. The trout species of fish is surviving well in Kargil with growth rate of 100 to 145 grams per year, he said adding that Rs.6.53 lakhs have been spent on the development of rearing infrastructure at Fish farm Wakha and Damsna during the last fiscal while over 7.92 quintals of fish were sold to the public through these fish farms thereby earning a revenue of Rs.1.88 lakhs. He said that 21 raceway ponds including one earthen pond exist in the district while the department has realized revenue of over Rs 19, 000 as license fee during the last financial year.
